Havasupai Native Americans

The Havasupai have lived in an area known as Havasu Canyon, within the Grand Canyon, for the past 800 years. The name literally translates to “blue-green water people”. The tribe was known for its technologically advanced irrigation methods of agriculture, which allowed the tribe to grow crops in an area that lacked nutrient rich soil. Their main crops were corn, beans, squash, sunflowers, gourds and cotton. The Havasupai traditionally used the bow and arrow for hunting, and crafted their own hunting tools. Havasupai women gathered wild plants and seeds such as walnuts, wild candytuft, and barrel cacti.
